James Alexander Hamilton was born to James Gordon Hamilton and Louisa Fugate Thurston Hamilton. He was married to Sarah Lavina Harris Hamilton on October 29, 1868 in Clay County, Indiana. They had two sons: Theodore Hamilton and Carry Edward Hamilton.

James Hamilton, a groceryman of Seelyville, died of congestion of the stomach Tuesday evening. The deceased was a soldier in the late war, and was an active member in the G.A.R. being commander of the Seelyville post. He was 46 years of age and was a man who was well liked in the community.

James was in Company K, 149th Indiana Infantry, and was also a member of the GAR Post #410 in Seelyville, Indiana.
