ALEX HAINES DIES IN JOHNSTOWN
Was Eighty-Nine Years Old, in Appanoose County More Than 70 Years
The death of Alex Haines occurred at the home in Johnstown northwest of Plano this morning, Tuesday, Feb. 21, at nine after an illness of a few days which developed into pneumonia. This followed a period of ill health extending back a few months. This death removes one of Appanoose county's better known citizens of long residence. He has lived in the county for more than 70 years coming here from ? as a youth of 18 and dying at the age of 89, his birth being April 1843. Mrs. Haines, his wife of about 66 years, survives him, along with two daughters and four sons.
Mr. Haines was one of the sturdy and valued citizens of the community in which he lived ? years. He married Eliza Hudson and surviving besides the widow are Mrs. Ida Green of Emmetsburg, Iowa, Mrs. Frank Gaines, of _well, Idaho, and the sons E., J. Walter and Ed, all of this county. One sister of an ? family of twelve children survives, she being Mrs. Jane Anderson of Sparks, Okla. The family consisted of eight brothers and four sisters.
About the year 1913 or 1914, Mr. and Mrs. Alex Haines left their farm to make their home in Centerville, where they lived until about three years ago when they returned to the surroundings which they had so long lived at, in Johns township. It was there that the end came. He was for years a member of the Odd Fellows lodge and was a member of the Baptist church. He had acquaintances much beyond those of the average man, who recognized him as a man of splendid qualities, industrious and successful from years of activity as a farmer and was highly regarded by new aquaintances made during his residence in Centerville.
Funeral services will be held at Concord church at two o'clock Thursday, Feb. 23, and burial will be in the Concord cemetery. All members of the family will be present except the daughter in Idaho.
