Addison was a major league baseball player from 1888 to 1896. He was a pitcher with Chicago, Boston Brotherhood, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Brooklyn teams. He was a clerk in the Allegheny County Prothonotary’s office between playing seasons. He held the record for pitching the longest unfinished game in organized baseball until 1920. He was the pitcher for the Chicago Cubs for that game, which was played against Cincinnati on 02 Jun 1892 and went 20 innings.
When he retired, he became the clerk for the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas, No 1 until Dec 1906 when he was elected Sheriff of Allegheny County. He held that office until 1909. In 1915, he was elected Allegheny County Commissioner, to which his colleagues made him Chairman of the Board. When he was re-elected in 1919, he remained the Chairman. He was an advocate of improvement and progress in Pittsburgh with the building of roads and bridges his main goal. He was key in the building of the 3 ‘sister’ bridges across the Allegheny River. There is a dedication plaque on the 16th street bridge naming Addison and the others involved in the building of the bridge.
