John "Shorty" Gudknecht was the son of John "the Driver" Gudknecht and Annie Clothier. He worked in a tannery until he badly injured his hand and was unable to continue in that line of work. He then became a huckster, pushing a cart through the streets of downtown Philadelphia. He married Caroline Isabelle King (daughter of Samuel J. King and Ellen E. Leamy) with whom he had three sons: Charles Russell (my father); John; and James Herbert. There are no known pictures of my grandfather, but I am told his distinguishing feature was a congenital lump just above one of his eyes. After he and Caroline divorced, he never remarried. He died alone in a rooming house on Hope Street.
