Orange Gruber, oldest son of Andy and Tresa Gruber, was born near Canton, in Lewis Co., Mo., March 31, 1882, and died Sunday, March 6th, 1955, at the age of 62 years, 11 months and 6 days. On Dec. 23, 1915, he was united in marriage to Narine Higbee, near Canton by the Rev. J. H. Briscoe. To this union, a daughter, Evelyn was born. Besides his lifelong companion and daughter, he leaves to cherish his memory, his brother, Melven, and sisters, Bea and Virginia, and many other relatves and friends. He was united with the New Prospect Baptist church in early life and later moved his membership to the First Baptist church in Canton, where he gave freely of his service in many ways and became Deacon. He anticipated the needs of people and was always first with a helping hand. He praised the Lord with singing, bringing joy and comfort to others. He held membership in the Modern Woodman of America, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and American Federation of Labor - Carpenters Union. His health began to fail about 3 years ago but he went about his work until Saturday, March 5th, when he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage at his home in Canton and was rushed to St. Mary's hospital, Quincy, where he died Sunday evening. Funeral service was held in his memory Wednesday, March 9, 1955 at 2 at his church, with the Rev. M. D. Mulvania in charge. Music was furnished by four of his nieces, Mrs. Dorothy Tompkins, Mrs. Dell Bronstine, Mrs. Isabel Martin and Jean Tompkins, and another niece, Mrs. Mary Jo Fishback at the piano.
