Alphonse J. Groleau, 84, known as "Big Al" to his friends and family, passed away at Radius Healthcare Center on May 6, 2008. He had his left leg amputated and suffered a stroke during surgery. He died a few days later. He had diabetes and had been in a wheelchair for years. He was losing his sight and had bad neuropathy in his hands and legs. He went into the hospital on February 10th and never made it home again.
He was the husband of Loretta (Mitchell) Groleau for 38 years. They were married at Greendale People's Church and had been longtime members there. He was the father of the late Wendy Meridith and is survived by his children; James Groleau of Albuquerque, NM, Dennis Groleau and his wife Mary Ellen Hasenfuss of Franklin, Albin Waskevich and his wife Elinor of Auburn, Lee Kuizinas-Carpenter and her husband Donald of Pompano Beach, FL, Susan Anderson and her husband Norman of Worcester, Marie Waskevich of Spencer, Denise Adams and her husband Peter of Spencer and Daniel Waskevich and his wife Lisa of Worcester. He also left 25 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren behind. He was the beloved brother of Alfred, Jr., Adrian, Edward, Evelyn, William, Rita, Eugene and Raymond.
He was born in Andover, son of Alfred and Susan (Robertson) Groleau and was an Army veteran of World War II. He was the owner of Everett Electrical Company on Jackson Street in Worcester from 1963 until his retirement in 1995. He had many friends through the motor shop and he was a life member of the Masons.
A graveside service with military honors was held on Thursday, May 8 at 2:00 PM in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. There were no calling hours. Although he and my mother married the year after my husband and I, we loved him as our father. I baked him a heart shaped, double chocolate cake every year on his birthday, which he looked forward to like a little kid and appreciated very much. His last birthday was spent in the rehab center but I still baked his heart shaped cake, which he was all smiles about. The past few years it has been sugar free because of his diabetes but he didn't know it and enjoyed it just as much. I know it was more that I thought of him and thought enough of him to do this on his special day.
My mother was not able to attend the funeral because she was in the rehab center at the same time as him, with a broken hip. A memorial service will be held at a later date, once she is feeling well enough to attend.
His great-granddaughter wrote this beautiful poem through her tears, upon learning of his death.

I love him very much!
He's kind in every way.
Until one day he passed
away before I could say
good bye. I'm just glad
he doesn't have to suffer
no longer than this day.
But he's with God now I
don't have to worry. God
will treat him well. Although
I'll miss him a lot. He'll always
