Man who killed wife at Glenwood autism center charged
BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -
Police have now officially charged the man who shot and killed his wife at the Glenwood Autism and Behavioral Health Center in Birmingham near Liberty Park.
He's 50 year old James Davis of Birmingham. His wife is 55 year old Stephanie Grigsby of Birmingham. Davis is charged with Murder.
Around 2 p.m. on Friday, Birmingham police Lt. Sean Edwards said the man walked inside the Management Information System office on Glenwood's campus. He went into an office area and fired several shots at his wife, killing her. She was a Glenwood employee.
Glenwood CEO Lee Yount says the woman is a kind and compassionate person who worked at the center for 15 years. She says the staff is shocked and saddened by Friday's events.
There were people inside the building at the time of the shooting, but no one else was hurt.
Police are calling the shooting a "deliberate," domestic situation. They say the woman was targeted and no one else was hurt.
"So it was a deliberate act. This was definitely a domestic, deliberate situation here. It wasn't a bigtime workplace shooting. It was pinpointed, he knew exactly who he wanted to shoot. His wife was, apparently, the person that was shot," Edwards said.
Irondale Detective Michael Mangina says the suspect, carjacked someone close to the Glenwood campus and had that person drive him to a Jack's in Irondale. From there, the carjacking victim notified police and Irondale officers caught the suspect on foot on Montclair Road. He was still armed.
Charges have not been announced in the case but the man is currently in the custody of Birmingham police
A Glenwoods spokesperson said none of their clients were in danger during the situation.
Glenwood is a nonprofit organization that provides behavioral health care and services for children, teens and adults with autism spectrum disorder, as well as a treatment center for youth with behavioral health issues, according to their Facebook page.
The facility is located on 363 acres at 150 Glenwood Lane in the Liberty Park community.
