On February 1, 1922, in Barbreck, Edgar and Leah-Payton Griffin were blessed with the birth of a daughter, whom they named Helen.
Helen, lovingly called ‘‘Nanny" accepted Christ as her personal Savior at an early age and was baptized at the Mt. Triumph Baptist Church in Barbreck, by the late Rev. W.C. McGlory. As an adult, Helen moved to Lake Charles with her brothers, and became a member of the Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church, under the pastorage of the late Rev. C.S. Keyes. On Dec. 6, 1971, Helen was united in Holy Matrimony with Sam Captain and she then became stepmother to Dorothy Jackson. Helen never had any children of her own, but the love and concern she showed for all of her siblings' children made it evident that one doesn't have to bare a child to be a mother. On her 88th birthday, because of her unconditional love, her family gave her a party that displayed the love that she was so deserving of.
At 8:25 p.m. May 17, 2010, with the presence of her nieces and nephews, God called his servant home. Her departure was peaceful and now her journey is a success. Being the matriarch of her family, there was not a question asked that she couldn't answer, and for that, she will be greatly missed for her sharp mind and keen memory.
Preceding her in death, her parents, five brothers and three sisters.
Helen's memory will be forever in the hearts and minds of her family and friends. She leaves to cherish those memories, one brother, Murry (Catherine) Griffin of Lake Charles; one sister, Odelle Thomas of Morrow; stepdaughter, Dorothy Jackson of Lake Charles; three step-grandchildren; many nieces; nephews; other relatives and dear friends.
Her funeral will be at noon Saturday, May 22, in Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church. The Rev. Freddy Brown will officiate. Burial will be in St. John Catholic Church Cemetery in Kinder, under the direction of Combre Funeral Home. Visitation is from 8:30 a.m. Saturday in the church.
