Pioneer Resident of Epworth Dead
Maria Greathouse was born at Mt. Carmel, Illinois, Dec 11, 1825 and died at Epworth, Dec 27, 1912, aged 87 years and 16 days. At the age of two years she was bereft of both of her parents. She with her three brothers and one sister was brought up by her grandparents whose name was Shadle.
In 1850 she came to Iowa landing at Dubuque, April 27, and on Aug. 28, 1851, was united in marriage with Solomon Story. Six children were born of this union. On May 22, 1863, the husband fell in battle during the siege of Vicksburg, Miss., three weeks after the birth of the youngest child. Two daughters have preceded their mother to the promised land. Mary, the oldest, in Jan., 1872, and Mrs. Miranda Parker, in May, 1912. Two daughters, Mrs. Alice Parker of Decatur, Nebraska, and Mrs. Annabel Taubman of Schaller, Iowa, and two sons, William who has been the devoted companion of his mother's old age, and Solomon of Dubuque are left to mourn the loss of their mother. She is also survived by twenty four grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
Mrs. Story united with the Christian Church at Mt. Carmel in her early womanhood and on moving into Epworth placed her membership with the same church here where she has ever remained steadfast in the faith. She leaves a number of relatives beside those of her immediate family and a host of friends in the vicinity of Epworth who will miss her greatly.
Mrs. Story was one of those quiet home bodies who was interested not only in her own home but also in good things for other people. Even at her advanced age she could accomplish any good. Not so very long ago she made some quilts for the Missionary Society and made other hearts glad.
The funeral was held from the home, and was conducted by Rev. Rederus of the Presbyterian church of Farley. Interment was in Highview cemetery one half mile north of town. (1912)
