PORTSMOUTH - Della Porter Gray, 87, of the 900 block of Bold St., died July 1, 2011 in Portsmouth. She was born in Northampton County, North Carolina, and was the widow of Herman Gray. She was employed for more than 70 years and during those years she owned and operated an assisted care living facility and worked as an in-home companion until she retired in 2010. She was a member of New Hope Deliverance Church Center in Portsmouth and was also a member of the United Order of Tents. She was preceded in death by three siblings, Deborah Paige, Marie Turner and James Porter. Survivors include one son, Calvin James Stevenson (Barbara) of Portsmouth; one sister, Dorothy "Dot" Myrick of Richmond, Va., and two brothers, Bishop Willie Porter of Woodland, N.C., and Elder Joseph Porter of Portsmouth; five grandchildren, 15 great- grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held Saturday, July 9, at 11 a.m. at Faith Evangelical Church, 1800 Elm Ave., Portsmouth with Bishop Robert J. Branch, presiding and Elder Joseph Porter delivering the eulogy. Burial will follow in Roosevelt Memorial Park. A wake will be held Friday, July 8 from 6 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
