Alpha Ruth Graves, 80, died Wednesday, June 28, 2006 at home in Mossyrock, Washington. She was born June 13, 1926 to Earl and Edna (Rogers) Peterson in Lucas, South Dakota, where she also attended school.

During the Dustbowl years, she moved with her family to Amboy, Washington. On November 19, 1943 she was married to Howard Graves in Vancouver, Washington. During World War II, Alpha contributed to the war effort through her employment at the Vancouver Shipyards.

In 1951 they moved to Ridgefield, Washington where they raised their children.

In 1988, following Mr. Graves retirement, they moved to Long Beach, Washington. Mr. Graves preceded Alpha in death in 1997. In 2001 she moved to Mossyrock, Washington to be near family. She enjoyed the rural setting of Mayfield Lake near Mossyrock.

Alpha enjoyed the out-of-doors, including flower gardening, watching the deer, birds and "action" on the lake. She was an active and creative person who was a talented oil and tole painter. Above all she valued time with her family and her little dog, Mitzie.

Alpha is survived by her children, Tom (Mary) Graves of Ridgefield, Washington, JoAnne (Walt) Garrison of Vancouver, Washington, Sharon (Dwight) Hansen of Aurora, Oregon and Vicki (Grover) Oakerman of Mossyrock, Washington. Also surviving are ten grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.

Mrs. Graves was preceded in death by her husband, five brothers and one sister.

Memorials may be donations to the Salkum Fire Department.

Visitations for Alpha Graves were on Monday, July 3, 2006 at Evergreen Staples Funeral Home, Vancouver, Washington. A Funeral Service was also on Monday at Evergreen-Staples Funeral Home. Interment followed at Park Hill Cemetery, Vancouver, Washington.
