Melba Agnes Grafius
ARIZONA — Melba Agnes Grafius died peacefully in her sleep Monday, June 23, 2014, in Arizona.
Born in Philadelphia, Pa., Aug. 22, 1920, she was a daughter of the late Melba and Guy Elliot Grafius, who was a longtime employee of the Shamokin News-Dispatch.
Melba graduated from Shamokin High School in 1938. She obtained a degree in pharmacy from Temple University in 1942, a master's degree from the University of Maryland in 1947, studied at the University of California, Berkeley, and was awarded her doctorate in biological chemistry from Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., in 1964.
Melba served 30 years in the United States Navy Medical Service Corps, achieving the rank of commander. The majority of her military duty was spent in research at the United States Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md. Upon her retirement in 1975, she moved to Northumberland, Pa., as did her parents and sister.
She is survived by a sister-in-law, Pat Grafius, of Scottsdale, Ariz., and two nephews, Kurt Grafius and Guy Grafius, of Seattle and Minneapolis, respectively.
In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her sister, Elinor, who died in 2010, and her brother, Guy, who died in 2013. Melba will be inurned with her parents and sister at Saint James Lutheran Cemetery in Hobbie, Pa.
