Alphonse was the fourth of seven children born to Pierre Augustin Gounin, an immigrant from Anjou, Isere, France, and Rosalie Celeste Duval. A sailor by trade, he married Mary Watkins on April 18, 1877, the daughter of his sister Amelie's husband, Henry Watkins. They had seven children before Mary died within three months after the birth of her last child.

He remarried about three years later to widow Marie Celima (Gros) Boudreaux. She was 21 years his junior. They had three children together. After Celima's death in 1913, he moved to the Texas Gulf Coast with his daughters Mattie and Velma. He died in Galveston, Texas in 1926. His family returned his body to Berwick, LA where he was laid to rest in Willow Grove Cemetery next to his first wife Mary and son George who had died many years before.
