Bristow Couple Feted on Event of Fifty-fifth Wedding Anniversary (Iowa, 1941)
The fifty-fifth wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph J. Gough of Bristow, was celebrated January 27 at the home of their son, Edward T. Gough and family at Mount Vernon where the Bristow couple are spending the winter months.
Mr. and Mrs. Gough moved to Bristow two years ago from their farm located four and one-half miles northeast of Bristow where they spent 52 years of their married life.
For the last 25 years, Mr. Gough has assisted with the work of many churches and while not an ordained minister, has served in many pulpits of the county. He was issued a preacher's license many years ago, and officials of the church, recognizing his ability, urged him to devote his entire time to the ministry. However, Mr. Gough declined, saying, "I'm not qualified, and the responsibility of my family, as well as my experience as a farmer, make plain the course that I should pursue."
He assisted with the church work at Bristow and for six years supplied the Aredale, and assisted that congregation in building a church and a parsonage.
At the time Mr. Gough purchased the quarter section where the couple lived for 52 years, the land was virgin prairie unbroken by plow and without trees.
Of their six children who are living, three sons are ministers and one daughter is married to a minister. The children are, Galan R. Gough, Wilford I. Gough, and Mrs. Mildred Currell*, all living in Southern California; Joseph J. Gough, Jr., of Harvey, Illinois; Mrs. Susanna Kernahan of Washington, D. C. and their eldest son, Edward T. of Mount Vernon.
In celebration of their anniversary, Mr. and Mrs. Gough held an open house at their son's home on the Sunday preceding their anniversary.
