Mrs. Callaghan Dies; Taught Sioux Indians
Mrs. Frances Callaghan, 88, of 239 W. Borden Ave., died Tuesday at Community-General Hospital.
Born in Medina, she was a resident of Syracuse 47 years. Mrs. Callaghan had been a teacher, working with the Sioux Indians at Rosebud Mission in South Dakota. She also taught at St. Anthony of Padua school and was a substitute teacher for the Syracuse school system.
Mrs. Callaghan was a communicant of St. Anthony of Padua Church and had been a president of its Mother’s Club. She also was a member of the church’s Altar and Rosary Society.
Mrs. Callaghan was president of the South Side Library Club and was a member of the Third Order of St. Francis, St. Joseph’s Hospital Auxiliary, the Loretto Rest Guild and the House of Providence Auxiliary.
She is survived by four daughters, Teresa, Mrs. Vincent (Helen) Brennan, Mrs. Thomas (Jane) Moynihan and Mrs. Michael Tornatore; a son, Robert; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Gaynor-Maslyn Funeral Home and at 11 a.m. in St. Anthony of Padua Church. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, DeWitt, the Rev. Joseph D. Segrue officiating.
Calling hours will be 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, 119 South Ave.
