Killed when a Barksdale Field, La., A-26 Invader piloted by Lt. Philip I. "Phee" Russell of South Portland, Me., crashed into a housing project for war workers after getting caught in fog after an initial approach to the Portland Airport. The crash killed 19 people, and remains Maine's worst airplane disaster.
