Virginia Cousins by George Brown Goode
The untimely death of his father prevented Francis from receiving the education which had been planned for him and his elder brother, Mack, who became his guardian having died when he was fifteen his school days came to an end. He was offered a cadetship in the United States Military Academy at West Point, but the solicitude of his widowed mother prevented its acceptancy and a commercial career was the only one which remained open to him.

He was engaged in various business enterprises from 1827 to 1857; first until 1835 in a country store in Liberty, Indiana; 1835-1837 as commission merchant in Michigan City; 1838-1841 a member of the firm of Goode & Shotwell, dry goods merchants, New Albany; 1845-1846 in flour and grain business in Buffalo, New York, buying and shipping to New Orleans; 1848-1857 member of the firm of M.E. Reeves & Co., wholesale boot and shoe dealers, Cincinnati.

He was a clerk in the General Land Office, Washington, 1841-1845 during his brother's term of service in Congress. Retiring from business in 1857 he lived in Amenia, New York until 1866 then for four years in Middletown, Connecticut and subsequently in Arlington, Florida with occasional winters in the Bermudas and sometimes in Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia and Washington City.

He has never entered into public life or accepted office of any kind. He was the first Secretary of the Congressional Temperance Society which was organized during his residence in Washington and was for many years, President of the Board of Trustees of the Amenia Seminary. During his residence in Florida he has taken much interest in the efforts of the freedmen to attain to a position of self support and in the welfare of their village at Lone Star. He is a member of the Virginia Historical Society in whose prosperity he maintains an active interest. His reminiscences of men and events would if recorded make a most entertaining volume.
