Philip Gonka, 76, resident of Grand Island since 1928, died Aug. 5. Funeral services were conducted Aug. 9 in St. Mary's Cathedral by the Rev. Edmund Placek, O.F.M., Sioux City, Iowa. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery in Westlawn Memorial Park.
Philip Gonka was born June 19, 1878, in Austria, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Gonka. He came to the United States with his family, and they made their home at Columbus, Neb. He attended schools in that community. He and Mrs. Gonka were married Sept. 26, 1900, at Duncan, Neb. They moved to Howard County in 1902 and farmed in that locality until coming to Grand Island in 1928. Mr. Gonka had been employed by the St. Francis Hospital and Mac's Coffee Shop. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Frank Placek, Grand Island; and one sister, Mrs. Thomas Sokol, Loup City. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brothers, and one sister.
