BARBARA GOLTRY

The subject of this brief sketch, Barbara Jane McGill, was born near Colombus, Bartholomew, Indiana, January 18, 1836; departed this life at her home in Russell, Iowa, after a brief illness, January 4, 1916, aged 79 years, 11 months and 17 days. She was united in marriage to John Goltry March 22, 1855, near Greenville, Jennings County, Indiana. The union was blessed with twelve children, eleven of whom are living: Ollie West, Flagler, Colo.; S. T. Goltry, Russell, Ia.; Arvilla Simpson, Guss, Ia.; Dr. C. F. Goltry, Westboro, Mo.; Winifred Copeland, Nodaway, Ia.; Jennie Fluke, Osceola, Ia.; J. B. Goltry, Russell, Ia.; J. A. Goltry, Chariton, Ia.; Fred Goltry, Russell, Ia.; Clara Dahlman, Russell, Ia.; Myrtle Pepper, Nodaway, Ia. One daughter, Mrs. Alda Boyd, preceded the mother in death, having departed this life for the heavenly home August 6, 1909.

Sister Goltry and husband left their Indiana home the same year in which they were married and came to Iowa and settled on a farm northeast of what is now the beautiful little city of Russell. They settled on a homestead in Cedar Township, and here on the old home place the children were born and grew to manhood and womanhood. Eight of the children became successful teachers in the public schools. The father and mother and all the children have had a prominent part in the general uplift of the community life, commercially, socially, morally and spiritually.

Sister Goltry gave her heart to Christ in early womanhood, uniting with the Church of Christ nearly fifty years ago. She has lived all these years an earnest, devoted Christian life. The writer of this sketch remembers the faithful, devoted life of Sister Goltry during a pastorate of six happy years with the Church of Christ at this place.

She and her husband removed from the farm to Russell, March 1, 1893, making their home in the west part of town until called to the home on high.

During her long life Sister Goltry has been a source of comfort and joy to many. She was always ready to visit and take care of the sick and to help the needy and to encourage the weak. She leaves her children, grandchildren and other relatives a rich heritage, a memory of loving deeds, kind words, and self-sacrificing life given freely for the good of others.

Her husband preceded her to the spirit world, having departed this life April 4, 1910. She was the oldest child in a family of five children. At the age of eight years her father died and two years later her mother died. The children were then separated and she went to make her home with Mr. and Mrs. Allen Brown of Greenville, Indiana, with whom she remained until she was united in marriage and came to Iowa.

During her illness she received every kindness that kind hands and loving hearts could bestow.

She leaves to mourn her departure, the children, 39 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, one brother, Tobias McGill of Great Bend, Kansas, one sister, Clementine Reisner of Eugene, Oregon, other relatives and many friends.

The funeral services were held at the Church of Christ in Russell, Iowa, on Friday afternoon, January 7, 1916 at 1 o'clock, conducted by her former pastor, P. M. Green of Oakland, Iowa. A large concourse of sympathetic neighbors and friends were present in sympathy with the bereaved and to pay a tribute of respect to the memory of her whom they had known and loved. The music was in charge of Miss Viva Carpenter, who was assisted by members from the various church choirs. The floral offerings from relatives and friends were profuse and beautiful.

Interment was made beside her husband in the Russell Cemetery.
Wife of John Goltry.
