Peoria ILPeoria Journal Star, 20 Dec 1973MAZIE BIRKETT Mrs. Mazie Burkett, 79, of 409 E. Thrush, a retired welfare director for the Salvation Army here, died at 2:30 a.m. yesterday at St. Francis Hospital where she was admitted 20 minutes earlier. Mrs. Birkett had been with the Salvation Army for 59 years, serving for 27 of those years as the director of welfare and the day care center here. She also was in charge of the Christmas basket clearing bureau before her retirement in 1960. A resident of Peoria for 40 years and of the current address for 10 years, she was born in Freeport, Mich., Jan 25, 1894. She was a daughter of George and Susannah Clemens Glick and married Envoy Henry "Harry" Birkett at Lake Odessa, Mich., Sept. 15, 1915. He died here Jan. 9, 1967. She was a member of the Salvation Army, Peoria Social Workers Club, Pre-school Association, Richwoods Day-Homemakers Extension, and the Senior Citizens of Grace Lutheran Church. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Theodora Richards and Mrs. Everett (Phyllis) Coombs, both of Peoria; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. One son, Vernon, two sisters and one brother preceded her in death. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow at Wilton Mortuary with Brig. Raymond Carroll of the Salvation Army officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery. Friends may call at the mortuary from 6 to 9 tonight. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army Citadel.
