Enlisted in Company E of the Fourth Michigan Volunteer Infantry on June 20, 1861, for 3 years. Discharged for disability on Washington D.C. on June 16, 1861. Enlisted once again in Battery B of the First Michigan Light Artillery on December 4, 1862. Promoted to Corporal on March 1, 1864. Mustered out of service on June 14, 1865, in Detroit, Michigan.
