She was the youngest of the six children of McNary "Mack" and Mary Isabella (Doak) Gilliland, and she married Robert David Austin on 7 January 1896. At some point after Robert's death, she married Garrison Nimrod Boyd. Her death certificate lists her as Martha Austin Boyd, although she is buried next to her first husband, Robert Austin. The couple share a headtone with their daughter Alta.
