Mary Ann Gilchrist Barnes


Funeral service for Mary Ann Gilchrist Barnes, 78, of Decatur will be Wednesday, December 22, 2010, at 2 p.m. at the Courtland Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Daniel Gilchrist IV officiating. Burial will be in Courtland Cemetery following the service. Visitation will be tonight from 6 to 8 at Roselawn Funeral Home.

Mrs. Barnes, who died Sunday, December 19, 2010, at Parkway Medical Center, was born January 6, 1932, in Decatur to James Angus Gilchrist and Amelia McGuire Gilchrist. She attended Hazlewood High School and Florence State Teacher's College. She taught biology and English in Lawrence County Schools, was a librarian for Thiokol Corporation, Huntsville, and owned and operated B & G Greenhouses in Neel with her husband. She was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Barnes is survived by her husband of 60 years, William Cleedoth Barnes; three sons, William Cleedoth Barnes Jr. (Paula) of Decatur, John Louis Barnes (Ginger) of Houston, Texas, James Gilchrist Barnes (Tammy) of Decatur, and one daughter, Mary Louise Barnes Ogle (Greg) of Decatur; five grandchildren, Mary Virginia Barnes Baugh (Greg), Elizabeth Haywood Barnes, John Louis Barnes Jr., Gregory Stephen Ogle Jr., and James Paul William Ogle, and one great-grandson, William Gregory Baugh; one sister, Amelia Gilchrist Rice (David) of Decatur, and one brother, James Angus Gilchrist Jr. (Reeta) of Marshall, Texas.

Pallbearers will be Bingham Edwards, Gary Grisham Jr., Lynn Haney, Burt Pepper Jr., John Prestwood, Robert Redman Jr., Samuel Stone, John Pempleton.

The family requests that memorials be made to Hospice of the Valley, Decatur General Hospital Foundation, or to a charity of your choice.
