A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 20, 2000, in Holman's Funeral Service for Carrie Oliver Gifford, who died May 16 of cancer at age 86.
Mrs. Gifford was born Oct. 19, 1913, in Oakland, Calif., and was raised in Portland. Her maiden name was Oliver. She graduated from Washington High School in 1933 and attended Oregon Agricultural College. She was a telephone operator and then managed a rooming house during World War II. After her marriage, she was a homemaker and foster mother. She later worked for Tommy Luke Florist, Jay Jacobs, Norcrest China, Moreland Hardware and was flower shop manager for Dieringer's Market.
In 1960, she moved to Toppenish, Wash., where she co-owned and managed with her husband a hardware and gift store and a farm. She returned to Portland in 1970. In 1938, she married David Swartz; they later divorced. She married Lester Gifford in 1946; he died last December.
Survivors include her sons, Frank, Steve, Bill, Joe and Bryan; sister, Dora Hansen; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Disposition is by donation to Oregon Health Sciences University for medical research with eventual interment in Lone Fir Pioneer Cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to the American Cancer Society.
