A memorial gathering will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, in Holman's Funeral Service for Lester E. "Giff" Gifford, who died Dec. 28 at age 78.
Mr. Gifford was born Jan. 13, 1921, in McClure, Ill. In 1942, he served in the U.S. Army. He lived in Portland from 1943 to 1960 and then in Toppenish, Wash., where he owned a hardware and gift store, and on a farm in Granger, Wash., before returning in 1970. He was a cutting supervisor for the sleeping-bag department of Hirsch-Weis (White Stag) in the 1950s and again from 1970 until retiring in 1983. In 1946, he married Carrie Oliver.
Survivors include his wife; sons, Frank and Bryan, both of Portland, Steve of Denver, Bill of Everett, Wash., Joe of Selah, Wash.; brother, George of Waltonville, Ill.; sisters, Ruth Dellinger of De Funiak Springs, Fla., Louise Pruett of Perryville, Mo., and Juanita Long of Waltonville; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. His daughter, Martha C. Estrada, died in 1970.
Private interment will be in Lone Fir Cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society or American Diabetes Association.
