GIFFIN, Carl Cleveland, MD, F.R.C.P.(C) - 82, Truro, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, August 6, 2008, in Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro, surrounded by his loving family, after battling Parkinson's disease for many years. Born in Halifax in 1926, he was a son of the late Smith Cleveland and Emma (Meisner) Giffin. Carl is survived by his wife, the former Elizabeth "Betty" Ellis; children, Scott Giffin, MD (Shari), Saint John, N.B.; Gaye MacDonald, Truro; Robert "Robbie" Giffin (Karen), Whistler, B.C.; Ann Waswa (Joseph), Fort Hope, Ont.; brother, Cyril Giffin, Halifax; sister, Gwen Gough, Halifax; grandchildren, Mason, Morgan and Mallory MacDonald, Truro; Brea and Rane Giffin, Saint John, N.B.; Hannah, Benjamin and Parker Waswa, Fort Hope, Ont. Carl graduated from Queen Elizabeth High School, Halifax, in the first graduating class. Undergraduate education at Dalhousie University led to graduation from Dalhousie Medical School, class of 1951. He did general practice two years in Inverness, Cape Breton, before returning to Dal to do his psychiatric training. He was the first winner of the Climo Trophy for Athletic Achievement at Dal, and winner of two gold D's at Dalhousie University. He and Betty were married in 1953. After Carl finished his psychiatric training at Dalhousie University in 1959 and went to Truro to open the Cobequid Mental Health Clinic. He served as Chief of Staff at Colchester Hospital and sat on the Provincial Driver's Licensing Board. He established the Psychiatric Day Hospital in the Colchester County Hospital. He was a long-time member of the Kiwanis Club, former Deacon of First Baptist Church, Truro, and served in the choir for many years. He loved playing music and singing and sang in many choirs. He was an avid sports fan and he especially loved holidays and spending time with his family at Brule. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday, August 11, in Mattatall ~ Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young St., Truro. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 12, in First Baptist Church, Prince Street, Truro, with Rev. Andy Crowell officiating.
