Amia Leta (Carpenter) Gibson, 82, of West Lafayette, passed away at 8:40 pm, Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at St. Anthony’s Health Care.
Born December 18, 1933 in Hugo, OK, she was the daughter of the late John Heywood and Lorraine G. (Hall) Carpenter. After graduating from high school, Amia earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Tulsa and her master’s degree from Indiana State University.
Amia worked at Purdue University in the Continuing Education Department for 15 years. Prior to that she was a teacher in Kentland, IN, Freeland Park, IN, and Stockland, IL. Amia was a member of Bethel Christian Life Center, now Connection Point Church. She was a former member of Sweet Adeline; the Late Bloomers; a former member of Order of the Eastern Star, past Matron of the Earl Park/Fowler Chapter; and she went to college with Rue McClanahan of Golden Girls.
She is survived by her children, John David Fleming of West Lafayette, Dennis Fleming (wife: Lisa) of Lafayette, Michael Fleming of West Lafayette, Tom Fleming (wife: Molly) of Chicago, and Cary Gibson (wife: April) who is stationed in Misawa, Japan; five grandsons; and one granddaughter.
Preceding her in death with her parents is one grandson, Patrick Thomas Fleming.
