Birth: Jun. 5, 1781
Hampden County
Massachusetts, USA
Death: Apr. 25, 1852
Morrow County
Ohio, USA

Pamelia [aka Amelia] Gibbons was the first of two children born to Mary Goss Davidson and Lemuel Gibbons. Her parents did not stay together and she moved to Pennsylvania with her mother, half-sister and brother around the time she was 12 to live with her maternal aunt and uncle, Enos and Sarah Goss Seward.

She married Grove Messenger [son of Hannah Higley and Capt. David Messenger] in about 1800 and she and Grove moved to Licking County, Ohio as members of a land resettlement group called the Licking Land Company who were the founding pioneer families of Granville, Ohio.

Pamelia and Grove had two daughters [Adah, b 1803, and Eliza, 1805-1807] and after their move to Granville, Ohio in 1805, they had two sons [Frederick Dent, b 1806, and William Henderson b 1808].

Grove enlisted in the War of 1812 with his two brothers, Campbell and David Jr. They were probably involved in the Fall of Detroit and taken prisoner but the British were unable to feed and care for the prisoners so they were taken to a site near present day Cleveland and made their way on foot back to Granville. With the possible motivation of a $124 signing bonus and the promise of 160 acres of government land, Grove re-enlisted. He was taken Prisoner of War and died in a Montreal hospital on 29 Jan 1814.

The 1820 census finds Pamelia living in Franklin Twp, Licking Co., Ohio. Eventually she married Isaac Norton in 1825. The 1850 census finds her living with her son William in Bloomfield Twp, Morrow County.

She is buried in the Messenger family plot with her son, daughter-in-law and a young grandson, Grover, is buried nearby.
