OBITUARY. S. R. Gerald, pioneer citizen of McGregor, died Saturday and was laid to rest Sunday afternoon in the presence of many friends.
S. R. Gerald was born near Clinton, La., February 21, 1847, and died at Austin, Texas, April 17, 1909.
He lea[ves] a wife, four daughters, six sons, a mother and four brothers bereaved. But as his health was so enfeebled and his suffering so great, they all feel God was wise and good to take him home.
Mr. Gerald came to McGregor when the town was laid out twenty-six years ago, bought lots and let the contract for his residence and business house, which was later destroyed by storm. So in the many ways that a good citizen counts in the upbuilding of a town his memory stands forth as one of the foundation stones of our little town, now the pride of all who live here.
In the business world he was one of the most popular men in our midst, his courtesy, kindness and aristocratic bearing winning for him friends from his employers, from the clerk under his care and from the patrons who would even wait for hours that they might secure his services.
He was a Confederate Veteran, having served his country when not of age. And also an honored member of the Knights of Pythias, which order conducted his funeral. They were assisted by Rev. Jno. H. Myers, his pastor, who tenderly tried to comfort the living and honor the dead.
He made a profession of religion twenty-four years ago, and united with the Baptist church. He lived in active service for many years, being at one time superintendent of the Sunday school, later a teacher, and always--even after his health began to fail--faithful at the morning service. He was one who helped to build the church here.
