Anson Neal George, 88, of Janesville, Iowa, died on Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at Allen Memorial Hospital, Waterloo, Iowa.
Neal was born on January 2, 1924, in Waverly, Iowa, the son of Floyd Neil and Florence Mae (Holden) George. He was baptized and confirmed at Janesville United Methodist Church.
He was a graduate of Janesville Consolidated Schools and then attended Iowa State University. He enlisted in the US Marines in 1940 and was honorably discharged in July of 1943. After his discharge, Neal resumed farming with his father. Neal was united in marriage to Helen Johnston on January 1, 1947 in Janesville. He lived all of his life in Janesville, except for the 3 years he served in the Marines. As a lifetime member of the Janesville United Methodist Church, Neal served his church in many leadership capacities. He was a past 4-H leader, served on the School Board, and was a Ham Radio operator. Neal was very dedicated to serving his community and also as a Nomad volunteer throughout the United States.
He was a member of the Janesville Lions, Janesville American Legion Post #522 and the
Janesville United Methodist Church.
Neal is survived by his wife, Helen of Janesville, two sons, David (Mary) George of Bemidji, Minnesota; Ken (Christine) George of Liberty, Missouri; a daughter, Carol (Gene) Anhalt of Waverly, Iowa; and a son-in-law, Greg Henley of Garner, Iowa; 12 grandchildren, Clement George, Melissa Humphrey, Adam George, Ryan George, Tyler George, Jeremy Anhalt, Paul Anhalt, Sara Shearer, Terence Henley, Patrick Henley Dennis Mabb and Christian Hooper; 7 great grandchildren, Maddox Humphrey, Cecelia Humphrey, Avi Humphrey, McKenna George, Will George, Clara George, Emma Anhalt, Adam Anhalt; and 7 step great grandchildren, Brendan, Taylor and Keenan Humphrey, Elizabeth Faddness, Cassandra Langhout, and Charles Bennett; and a brother-in-law, Larry Everett of New Sharon, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Beverly Everett; a daughter, Marie Henley; and a great granddaughter, Audrey Anhalt.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 24, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Janesville United Methodist Church in Janesville with Pastor Mary Schnepf officiating.
Following the service, the Janesville American Legion Post #522 will give honors at the church. Burial of his cremains will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday at the Oakland Cemetery, Janesville. Visitation will be held on Friday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Funeral Home, Waverly, and for one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church. Memorials may be directed to the Janesville United Methodist Church or the Janesville American Legion Post #522.
