Margaret Ann Harper George of Lilly Street died peacefully on Friday, December 9th, 2011 at the Raleigh General Hospital at the age of 92. Born Dec. 12, 1918, to Mabel and Jeff Harper. In addition to her parents, Margaret Ann was preceded in death by her brother, Thomas Harper and her sister, Louella Wray. Margaret Ann attended Concord College where she earned her elementary teaching certificate. She taught for several years in Eccles, before marrying Theodore George Sr. on July 2, 1943, and who died on Aug. 2, 1970. Margaret Ann had been an active member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church where she taught music and the four year old preschool class of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Day School, retiring in the 1980’s to care for her then aging mother. She was honored by the Beckley Women’s Club for her 50 years of service with the Golden Anniversary Award. Two great joys of her life were bowling and playing bridge. She will be remembered for her loving and generous spirit by her survivors: sons, Theodore D. George Jr., and Stephen Allen George, their wives Sue and Robin; a daughter, Pamela Ann Smith and husband, Mark; six grandchildren, Ryan D. George, Brad A. George, Ashley Lynn George, Andrew George Smith, Ginger Lee Steele and David F. Greene; a nephew, Dr. Gary David Wray; three great nieces and their families, and faithful care-givers, Sarah Howlett and Juanita McDaniel as well as many others. On Tuesday, December 13th, Margaret’s family will bring her back to St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 200 Virginia Street, Beckley where she will lie in repose from 2:00 pm until the service hour of 3:00 pm. The family will receive friends during this time. The Burial of the Dead: Rite One will be celebrated by the Very Rev. Adeeb Khalil. Margaret Ann will then be laid to rest the George family plot at the Sunset Memorial Park beside her beloved Ted. The family suggests contributions can be made to St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church or their Episcopal Day School, 200 Virginia Street, Beckley, WV 25801 Condolences may be sent to the family’s guestbook at www.meltonmortuary.com.
