Elizabeth K. Balch, 83, of Fresno, Calif., formerly of Sioux City, died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000, in Fresno.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Brian Danner officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Le Mars, Iowa. Visitation will be 6 to 9 p.m. today, with a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Larkin Morningside Funeral Home in Sioux City.

Mrs. Balch was born Feb. 15, 1917, in Le Mars, the daughter of John and Mary (Bouma) Gengler. She was raised in Le Mars and graduated from St. Joseph School of Nursing in Sioux City in 1939.

She married John H. Balch on Dec. 2, 1941, in Cheyenne, Wyo. He died Nov. 18, 1953, in Memphis, Tenn. She returned to Sioux City and lived here until 1964.

She was employed as a registered nurse while in Sioux City, with St. Joseph Hospital and St. Vincent Hospital. She was employed with Memphis Baptist Hospital and at a Sacramento, Calif., hospital. She was then employed with the Veterans Hospital in Fresno.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Fresno. She served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1943 to 1946.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Carlsberg of Long Beach, Calif.; a son and his wife, John T. Balch and Carol Finlayson of London, Ontario, Canada; and four grandchildren, Aley, Nick and Elias Balch and Alice Carlsberg.

She also was preceded in death by a son, James I.; four brothers, Jack, George, Nick and Hank Gengler; and three sisters, Anne Beacom, Gert McDevitt and Philomena Gengler.

Pallbearers will be Bob, Jim, George, Mike and Bill Gengler and Harry DeMarest.
