Absalom R. Gedney was a boot and shoe maker who lived and worked entirely within New York City's Bowery in the pre Civil War years between 1833-1856. He lived in nine different residences mere blocks apart spanning the twenty three years.

abt. 1848, New York, New York Co., New York: went into partnership with William Dana Bigelow (1819-1897) to form Bigelow & Gedney Boots & Shoes; 2 Bowery Street, later 142 Chatham Street.

1856, Greenfield, La Crosse Co., Wisconsin: removed to Wisconsin with his wife and four of five sons. Eldest son John L. Gedney remained in New York City.

1 May 1858, Greenfield, La Crosse Co., Wisconsin: died as per the obituary of his son, Matthias Anderson Gedney.(1)
