GAYLE, Sarah Elizabeth Samuel Jones, passed on August 1, 2014. She was born on May 11, 1922 to Robert Lawson and Sarah E. Watts Samuel. Her mother died at birth of her and her twin brother. They were raised with their 11 double first cousins in Caroline County. She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Albert Jones, who died during the invasion of Normandy; and by her second husband, Richard "Dick" Gayle, to whom she was married to for 61 years; her sisters, Ethel Cobb, Mary Townsend; her brother, Alfred Samuel; and her closest cousin, Alice Crawford. She leaves behind her daughter, Diane Gayle Reid; granddaughter, Sarah E. Reid; and great-grandson, Michael R. Heinrich; sister-in-law, Margaret Taylor Mason; and cousins, Betty and Margie; 10 nieces and nephews; three who showed their love by keeping in touch with her, Bill Gayle, Pennsylvania, Richard Gayle, California, Betsy Vick, Virginia; her dear lifelong friend, June Bookman and her five children; Ralph and Mildred Baker's children, Carolyn Stewart and Wayne Baker; and her card playing buddy, Sandy Hall. She loved to tell people she had been a queen three times in her life. She never had to work, but did for short periods at Philip Morris, Miller and Rhoads and Ed's Marine of Ashland. She enjoyed her life and was full of fun, hyperactive, an extrovert and had everything she ever wanted, except a house full of children. She loved people, especially men! She was a member of Central Baptist Church for 54 years, where she taught Sunday school, worked with Vacation Bible School and helped prepare dinners. She was active in the Manchester-Richmond Women of the Moose 1078 for 27 years, where she helped whereever she could. She worked Bingo two times a week for 25 years, until this past January. She volunteered at the Johston-Willis Hospital Gift Shop for over 10 years. She was a member of the Manchester Order of the Eastern Star 53. She helped her husband, Dick establish the Central Chesterfield Ruritan Club. She could be seen driving the tractor to mow the grass there. She helped her husband when he was the Commodore of the Virginia Power Boat Association. She went camping with his Boy Scout troops. Her favorite accomplishment with her husband was the reestablishment of Camp Baker, which offers respite care for children with special needs. In 2008, she was inducted into the Chesterfield County Senior Volunteer Hall of fame for her volunteer work. Her most favorite trip was to Ireland - the kind of her forefathers where the grass was green. Donations can be made in her memory to Camp Baker, 7600 Beach Rd., Chesterfield, Va. 23838 and Central Baptist Church, 1500 Courthouse Rd., N. Chesterfield, Va. 23236. She was a beautiful woman, both inside and out and had a great life for 92 years. A celebration of her life, ceremonies, burial and reception will be held at Central Baptist Church on Wednesday, August 6, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. Special note: No one should wear black. She liked colors. We are celebrating.
