The well-worn fieldstone was discovered below the ground level with an inch of the top showing. The lettering is fairly legible: "Ens DG child 1737". It no doubt that of a child of Ensign Daniel Gates ]1695-1759], most likely a stillborn. Its name was not "Child". The East Haddam and 1st Church records have failed to reveal the identity of this child. Four children of Ensign Daniel Gates namely Sarah, Daniel, Paul and Lois were baptized the same day on 18 July 1736 [East Haddam 1st Church record]. This fieldstone was recorded by Dr. David Patterson in October 1860. It is plot #280 on the 1958 surveyor's map of this ground.
