Caleb born July 16, 1776, baptized, August 26, 1776. He resided in East Haddam on his father's homestead and did not marry. He was a soldier in the War of 1812. He taught school in the winters and farmed in the summers. In religious matters, he was considered a "free thinker", and while he always attended services on the Sabbath, he was not a member of the church. After his brother Russell died, he raised his two children, Caleb Foote Gates and Esther Elizabeth Gates. He died in East Haddam, March 17, 1862, age 86 and was buried in the First Church Cemetery.
