Flossie I. "Onie" Short, 81, of Parsons, died at 2:25 p.m., Sunday, February 19, 2012 at Elm Haven West Nursing Home in Parsons. She had been in failing health.

She was born November 4, 1930, in Miltonvale, Kansas to Ralph "Red" and Flossie (Emig) Garretson. As a young girl, she moved with her family to Parsons where she grew up and attended school. In 1950, she graduated from Labette County Community High School in Altamont.

She and Melvin C. Short were married July 22, 1950 in Frostburg, Maryland. He served over 20 years of active military service during World War II and the Korean Conflict. During that time, the couple lived in various areas and, in 1964, returned to Southeast Kansas. In 1968, they moved to Parsons where she had lived since. She was preceded her in death by her husband, Melvin Short, on August 14, 1992.

In earlier years, she worked at Stewart's Drug Store and Litwins, both in Parsons; and 18 years as a sales representative at Westco in Parsons. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Parsons. Onie enjoyed playing bingo and cards and going to the casinos.

Survivors include: One Sister – Rose Mary Dodson Topeka, KS One Nephew – Steve Brunenn and wife, DeLisa rural McCune, KS One Niece – Tammy Rose Dodson Kansas City, MO One Great-Nephew – Tyler Brunenn Ft. Collins, CO One Great-Niece – Melissa Leonard Austin, TX Brother-in-law – Wayne W. Brunenn rural McCune, KS Numerous Garretson and Bush family members Dear Friend – Geneva Smith rural Dennis, KS

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Ruth Brunenn.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at McCune Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-7:00 p.m., Tuesday, at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons.

Memorials are suggested to the Assembly of God Church or St. Jude Children's Hospital. These may be left at or mailed to Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, P.O. Box 374, Parsons, KS 67357.
