Maria Luisa Garcia, our loving mother who nourished us from her womb to who we are today, entered eternal rest July 2, 2009, at the age of 86. She was born Oct. 8, 1922, in Chamberino, N.M., to Jose and Jesusita Chavez.
Maria Luisa's greatest joy was her family, having born four generations of grandchildren and her strength was through Jesus Christ our Lord. Since 1961, when her husband, Vicente Garcia Sr., died, she raised her 11 children by herself and guided them to be successful with a blessing of the Lord. When her children were growing up in the town of Anthony, Maria Luisa enjoyed attending their school functions at Gadsden High School, especially the band concerts. Her pride and joy were her children; all of her sons became successful engineers and even raised a son who retired from the Navy as a captain. Her daughters were successful too, where they gave birth to a new generation.
As she got older, Maria Luisa was the center of attention when family would come to visit and the family grew to be numerous as the stars. She loved each of her children equally from the oldest, Frank, to the youngest, Manuel. Great appreciation is given from the family to Reina, her youngest daughter, who took care of her during her last few years.
Maria Luisa lived life to its fullest, and enjoyed listening to music, especially '40s swing and Mexican serenade songs. In her later years, she developed a strong bond with her friends at Anthony's Senior Citizen Center and always talked about her volunteer work in helping out at the center. Many a time she would even leave family visitors to hop on the van that took her to the center and, at times, she would walk to the center if she missed the van. She also enjoyed traveling to Santa Fe, California, Las Vegas and especially going to the casino. But throughout her life, she strongly believed in the Lord and attended St. Anthony's Catholic Church until her health precluded her from doing so.
Survivors include five sons, Frank Garcia and wife, Rosie, of Riverside, Calif., Vicente "Gigi" Garcia and wife, Lucilinda, of Las Cruces, Joe Louis Garcia and wife, Wanda, of San Diego, Calif., Ruben Garcia Sr. and wife, Sylvia, of Santa Fe, Manuel "Ito" Garcia and his wife, Yvonne, of La Mesa; five daughters, Rosalia Minjarez, Romelia Garcia, Guadalupe Garcia and Reina Bojorquez and husband, Salomon, all of Anthony; and Margarita Chavez and husband, Barney, from Chaparral. Other survivors include 25 grandchildren, Lisa, Vince, LeTisha, Christina, Bernie Jr., Frankie, Isaac, Oscar Jr., Alice, Rosemary, Michael, Ivan Dominic, Desiree, Josie, Tony, Steven, Ruben Jr., Humberto, Laura, Viola, Rebecca, Salomon, Ariana, Anahi and Enrique; as well as many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father, Jose Chavez; and mother, Jesusita Paiz Chavez; her brother, Amado Chavez; three sisters, Josefa Sanchez, Jesusita Pena and Teresa Chavez; her husband, Vicente E. Garcia; and her daughter, Martha Sanchez.
Calling hours for Mrs. Garcia will begin at 6 p.m. Monday, July 6, 2009, in St. Anthony's Catholic Church, 224 Lincoln Ave., where the prayer vigil is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. The funeral liturgy will be celebrated at 9 a.m., Tuesday, July 7, 2009, in the same church. The Rite of Committal and interment will follow in the Anthony Cemetery, where she will lay in rest.
Serving as casket bearers will be Frankie Lopez, Vince Garcia, Humberto Morales, Michael Garcia, Salomon Bojorquez Jr. and Ruben Garcia Jr. Honorary casket bearers will be Frank, Vicente, Joe Louis, Ruben Sr. and Manuel Garcia, Bernie Lopez, Isaac Lopez, Raymond Alaniz, Oscar Minjarez Jr. and Tony and Steven Lona.
Service arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Baca's Funeral Chapels, 300 E. Boutz Road, Las Cruces, (575) 527-2222.
