Carlton's parents were Edgar C. & Mary Gammage. Raised by his mother and step-father, Howard Maxwell Sager, Carlton spent most of his life in San Antonio. He enlisted in the United Sttes Army on Oct. 15, 1942 and was released on Oct. 1, 1945. He is buried with his wife, Melba Derinda Legg.
