Here is some answer to your "?" about Malinda's other husband and some information about her life.
Malinda J. Gaither, Ballard nee Pruitt
Born: 30 June 1851, Texas, Cooke County, Gainesville
Died: 30 November 1949, Oklahoma, Washington Co., Bartlesville
Malinda was the third of nine children born to Samuel Pruitt and Icybinda Wheeler. Her parents were married on August 7, 1845 in Morgan County, Indiana, but by 1847 they were established in Grayson County, Texas, where six of the nine children were born. The family left Texas just prior to the Civil War and moved to Rockford, Bourbon County, Kansas, where two of Samuel's brothers had come to be settled. The three Pruitt brothers and their families lived in adjacent dwellings and all joined the Union Army. One of Malinda's sisters was born in Kansas. After the war Samuel moved his family to Lawrence County, Missouri where the last two of Malinda's sisters were born. Malinda married Harrison Basil Gaither on October 27, 1872, in McDonald County, Missouri. Harrison Gaither was born August 22, 1821, in Bedford, Indiana, and was a Physician. He was married and had a family in Indiana when he enlisted in the Union Army on November 27, 1863. He was captured at Shiloh and was put to work as a physician for the Confederate Army which he did for six months prior to escaping back to Union lines. He was mustered out on January 27, 1865, and returned home but his family had moved and no one knew where to find them. Seven years later he married Malinda Pruitt. They had two children; Grant and Dovey, but only Dovey survived to adulthood. In 1888 the family moved to near Grove, in the Indian Territory where Harrison was a physician to the Native Americans of the area. Harrison Gaither died on May 6, 1893, in Wyandotte, Ottawa Co., Indian Territory. Malinda secondly married John P. Ballard, a shoe maker, about 1894. He died between 1910 and 1920. Malinda resided with her daughter Dovey who married Joel B. Saugee in Jackson Township, (near Bartlesville) Washington County, Oklahoma, until she passed away.

Bio provided by Ron Reid
Ron Reid,
I'm so pleased that you have written this bio for Malinda Gaither Ballard. It's very good, but I do believe there is one mistake: Grant Lee Gaither, Harrison & Malinda's son did in fact survive into adulthood. There was a criminal accusation against him for larceny. He was accused of stealing another Dr.'s gun, etc. The individual who accused him and signed as a witness to the crime was none other than: (wait for it).......John P. Ballard!
I guess that's one way of getting rid of an annoying step son. I have no information yet on what the disposition of the case was. Normally criminals in Indian Territory were sent to Fort Smith, Arkansas to be tried by Judge Parker--the hangin' judge. Grant shows up again in the 1900 US Census living in Grove with wife Nellie Berlin and son Floyd. That marriage did not last. Grant shows up all over the west--Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. He worked as a barber for some of that time (back when barbers let blood, pulled teeth, etc.) He married Stella Van Dyke in about 1915 and had three more children: Cleo Gaither (b. 1916--); Jack Gaither (b. 1918--); and Colleen Gaither (b.1925--). Grant Lee Gaither died 4 Sep 1949 in Gila Bend, Arizona. He is listed in Please let me know if you find anymore information about him. Thanks.
