A FRIGHTFUL EXPLOSION.
The Engine of a Berrien Cotton Gin Kills a Young man.

Last Saturday morning the engine of the new cotton gin of Mr. Madison DeVane exploded, killing one person and injuring several others. Mr. DeVane lives in Berrien county near Lois P. O., about 20 miles north of Valdosta. His engine was not entirely a new one, being made up some parts that not closely fit. James Futch was employed about the place when ginning begun and he was the unfortunate victim of the accident.

The engine had been running nearly four hours when, without warning, the boiler burst. A flying fragment struck Mr. Futch about the upper part of the ear, and cut off the upper half of his head. His body was blown about forty yards from where he stood firing the engine.

He was eighteen years of age, the son of Mr. Eley Futch and a most estimable young man.

Mr. Ras DeVane was also in the way of the explosion, but escaped with some bruises of the body and severe scalding.

Madison DeVane was slightly injured and a little boy hurt somewhat.
