AUSTINTOWN - There will be funeral services at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Austintown West Side First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Thomas Badanjek officiating, for Thelma Akins, 84, of 709 Country Pines Drive S.W. in Warren, who died Tuesday in the recovery room at St. Elizabeth Medical Center.

She was born Aug. 19, 1921 in Proctor, W.Va., the daughter of Samuel Francis and Ann Lavina Clark Furbee.

A 1939 Niles McKinley High School graduate, she worked in the purchasing and payroll department at the former Humana Hospital System in Kissimmee, Fla., for seven years, retiring in 1987, and was a member of the church.

She is survived by her husband, the Rev. Carl A. Akins, whom she married July 14, 1939; a daughter, Mrs. Mrs. Fonda Garland and husband Gary of North Jackson; six grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Doyne Arden Akins.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Robert P. McDermott Memorial Home, 614 Warren ave. in Niles, and from 9:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Burial will be at North Jackson Township Cemetery.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the church building fund, 6749 Mahoning Ave., Youngstown, OH 44515.
