Benno Friedman -- devoted father, grandfather, experienced world traveler, savvy businessman, wine lover and bon vivant, died Friday, July 27, at Trinity Hospice House surrounded by those who loved him most.
Born in Ft. Smith, AR, in 1927 to the late Irving and Elizabeth Friedman, Benno showed signs early of the interesting life he would lead. As a young coronet player, he formed his own big band and used that experience to talk his way into becoming a member of the Ohio State Marching Band. After college, he joined the U.S. Army, and was recalled to duty during the Korean War and spent active duty in charge of a tug in Greenland. During that time he corresponded with Maxine Victor, whom he had met while working as a lifeguard in the Catskills. When Benno was stationed at the Port of Livorno, Italy, the love of his life, Maxine, joined him there, where they married.
During his time in Italy, he met Italian wine producers and cultivated an exceptional knowledge and affection for wine.
Following his military service, they moved to Memphis, where his entrepreneurial spirit propelled him into launching many successful international business ventures.
Benno's love for wine augmented his love for food. He wrote a paper about his truffle-hunting experiences in Italy, he was one of the charter members of the Memphis Wine and Food Society, a member of Temple Israel and Downtown Rotary. Benno's zest for life was reflected in his unique ability to set goals and achieve them.
Benno was preceded in death by his beloved Maxine, his brother, Jay Fred and his sisters Jeanne and Helene Friedman Lichtman.
He leaves two children, Bruce (Kate) Friedman and Laine Friedman Agee, both of Memphis; his four grandchildren, Brian and Kimberly Friedman, Drew and Matthew Agee and his longtime associate James Killman.
Adhering to his desire to help provide for a better world, Benno donated his body to science.
A memorial service, celebrating Benno's life, will be held at Temple Israel. Benno's family requests that you honor Benno's memory by lifting a glass and toasting good friends.
