Death: Mar. 2, 2009

Iris Freeman Avra, 89, widow of Ralph M. Avra, died Monday March 2, 2009 at East Georgia Regional Hospital in Statesboro, Ga., after a brief illness.
She was born February 12, 1920 in Glynn County, the daughter of Robert L. Freeman and Nora Rowe Freeman DeLoach and her step father W. H. DeLoach . She was preceded in death by a brother Robert Freeman and a sister Ruby Ellen Hare. She graduated from Glynn Academy and lived in Glynn County all of her life, until moving to Statesboro last year. She worked for many years as a bookkeeper for Edgy Planing Mill. She was a teacher and member of Norwich Baptist Church for many years and later in life was an active member of the Joy-Seekers Sunday School Class of the First Baptist Church of Brunswick.
She was a wonderful daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her, and her memory will be greatly cherished by those who loved her.
She is survived by two sons, Robert F. Avra, and his wife Sue, of Statesboro, Ga. and Edward W. Avra and his wife Susan, of Waycross, Ga. Her grandchildren are Greg Avra and Will Avra of Statesboro, Ga., Rebecca Avra of Cleveland, Ga., and Walt Avra and his wife Mercy of Gainesville, Ga., Great-grandchildren are Bliss Avra and Thomas Avra of Gainesville, Ga., She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Herbert Hare.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 5, 2009 at the First Baptist Church of Brunswick. Interment will follow at Palmetto Cemetery Rev. Walt Avra (her Grandson), Rev. Peter Vivenzio, with special Music by Rebecca Avra (her niece) and Rev. Tommy McMillan.
Active pallbearers will be: Charlie Edgy, Michael Edgy, Harry Ward, Raymond Mock, Herbert Hare and Gary Hare. Honorary pallbearers will be Joy-Seeker Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church, Brunswick Visitation will be Wednesday March, 4, 2009 from 6 pm to 8 pm at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home Memorials may be made to the Hospice of the Golden Isles, 1692 Glynco Parkway, Brunswick, Ga. 31525 or First Baptist Church of Brunswick, Ga.
