HOMESTEADER OF 1886 BROUGHT BACK FOR BURIAL
Francis P. Freeland died in Hutchinson, Kansas, May 5th, 1928. He was brought back to Leoti for burial beside his wife, who preceded him a few years ago in death. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon, and was attended largely by his former neighbors and old friends. Mr Freeland was one of the pioneers of Wichita county, coming here with the first flush of homesteaders in 1886, and in the many long years he was a resident here, he was prominent in Grand Army circles, and in all civic affairs.
Francis P Freeland was born in McDonough county Illinois, March 11, 1842
He was Civil War Veteran, serving 3 years and 9 months in Co. D., 28th ILL. Volunteer Infantry.
He came to Wichita county in the spring of 1886 and lived here continuously until a short time before his death. Recently he has made his home with his daughter in Hutchinson, Mrs. Bessie E Parrish, where his death occurred on May 5th.
He was married in 1865 to Anna Maria Johnson, who passed on ten years ago. There were six children born to this union, four of whom are still living. They are C.A. Freeland of Rawlings, WY., Mrs. Nell Barger of Colorado Springs, CO., Mrs Mattie Scott of Hollywood, Calif. and Mrs Bessie E. Parrish of Hutchinson, Kansas.
Funeral services were conducted in the Presbyterian Church in Leoti on Tuesday at 4:00 o"clock by Rev. J. A. Davis and burial was by the side of his wife in Leoti cemetery.
