Doris was extremely generous in helping others and shared her time and talent for the betterment of her community. She served on the Community Advisory Board at Providence Memorial Hospital, was president of the hospital auxiliary, and has made and donated many gift items for the hospital gift shop. She made historical society displays at the Toppenish Museum and was an active member of the Yakima County Extension Homemakers which is affiliated with the national Association of Family and Community Education. She went through the chairs in this group. Her local affiliated club, Reservation Improvement Club worked for the betterment of Indian students and helped many who are in need of encouragement and continuation of the Indian culture. She was an enrolled member of the Yakama Nation and taught school in Klima, White Swan, Toppenish High School and the tribal school. She was the first Toppenish Pow-Wow Queen, was a 4-H leader for 25 years and was past secretary of the Cayuse Jr. Rodeo Association
She is survived by two sons, Byron (Janie) Cheney of Prineville, OR and Clifford Cheney of Toppenish; three daughters, Karen (Wayne) Gulley-Wesselius of Zillah, Sue (Daryl) Burton of John Day and Judy (Philip) Fortenberry of Bulverde, TX; a sister, Bobbi Brownlee of Satus; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Doris was preceded by her first husband, Clifford Cheney, her second husband, Everett Cook, her son-in-law, Gary Gulley and her best friends, Chuck & Jeanne Ray.
Visitation will be on Thursday October 2, 2014 from 1-5 PM at Colonial Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at the funeral home on Friday at 10 AM with interment to follow at the Zillah City Cemetery.
