Esther F. Bassett, 94, formerly of 16 Rushtown Road, Danville, passed away Monday, Jan. 12, 2015, at Nottingham Village Nursing Center, Northumberland.
She was born Jan. 23, 1920, in Rush Township, the daughter of the late Robert J. and Ellen Jane Delong Forney.
She graduated from Danville High School in 1937. After high school, she thoroughly enjoyed working at J.J. Newberry in Danville.
Esther was married to her husband of 63 years, Russell F. Bassett, who preceded her in death Feb. 2, 2006. They were married May 27, 1942.
She was a member of the former Rushtown Methodist Church, Rush Township, where she taught Sunday school and led youth groups, and later was a member of St. Peter’s United Methodist Church, Riverside.
Esther was an excellent baker and she loved gardening, especially caring for all her flower gardens. She was a 4-H leader and helped many girls learn to sew. Esther loved to read and do crossword puzzles. She and Russ had a love of the game Scrabble, and for the last 30 years of Russell’s life, they had a date every evening with the Scrabble board. Above all, Esther was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother to her family, whom she adored.
She is survived by one daughter, Jane B. Herman, and her husband Kenneth of Danville. Also surviving are one grandson, Mark D. Bassett, and his wife Amber of Bloomsburg; and one granddaughter, Marcie H. Riebe, and her husband Peter of Scranton. She is also survived by one great-grandson, Ty David Bassett, and by her daughter-in-law, Marie K. Bassett of Paradise, Pa.
She was preceded in death by her son, David E. Bassett, in 2011. Esther was the last member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by five brothers: Corey, James, Robert, Carl and Millard, and three sisters: Natalie Swartz, Bertha Pick and Mabel Scheetz.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend funeral services Friday, Jan. 16, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Visneski Funeral Home Inc., 10 W. Mahoning St., Danville, with the Reverend Dr. Donald N. Hurley officiating. Burial will follow in Rush Presbyterian Cemetery, Snydertown Road, Danville
