Blanche Marie Baker 87, passed away March 5th, 2013 surrounded by loved ones. Born Blanche Marie Fontaine on January 6, 1926 she grew up a farm girl in the small town of Orr, North Dakota. Always a woman with a curiosity and passion for life, it wasn't long before the small town of Orr could no longer contain her. Blanche left her home town when she enlisted in the US Air Force, for which she served during the Korean War. After her military service Blanche became an airline stewardess for Pacific Northern Airways now known as Alaska Airlines, on a route that frequented to Anchorage, Alaska. During a layover there Blanche was approached by a handsome gentleman named James Baker whom she would soon after come to marry and share her life with. Jim and Blanche made Humboldt their home in 1960 where Blanche effortlessly found her place in the heart of the community. She was a regular participant in local quilter's groups as well as an active member of the Calvary Lutheran Church congregation. Her spirit will continue to warm her seat in the back row pew with all the lovely Scandinavian ladies that so kindly saved her place there every Sunday for over 50 years. Anyone who met Blanche immediately recognized her beautiful spirit by the sparkle that was present in her sky blue eyes all the way up to the day of her passing. She was a woman of abundant grace, kindness, faith, optimism and strength and touched the lives of all those who came to know her. Her beautiful spirit lives on through her loving husband Jim; her three children Christine Castaneda, David Baker, and Susan McLearn; her two grandchildren James Castaneda and Jenaha Hochhalter; her two great-grandchildren James Jr and Sophia Castenada; as well as the many friends who have come to know her as family.
