Shirley Ann Beckwith, 75, a retired registered nurse with National Oncology Certification, left this world Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2007, to reside with our Lord.
Funeral: 11:30 a.m. Monday in Greenwood Chapel. Interment: Greenwood Memorial Park. Visitation: 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Greenwood Funeral Home.
Shirley worked at St. Joseph's Hospital until illness forced her to retire. She married Guy M. Beckwith in 1948 and raised five children, all the while moving around from one assignment to another. She did many years of volunteer work for Military Family Services, for which she received numerous recognition awards. Shirley was the glue that held her family together as they moved about the country and overseas. After her husband retired from military life, Shirley pursued her lifelong dream of helping others.
She obtained her G.E.D. and then went through the St. Joseph's LVN program in the early 1970s. She then entered TCJC's nursing program, graduating in the top of her class. After working several years at St. Joseph's Hospital, the opportunity came for her to obtain her bachelor's degree in nursing. Again, she graduated at the top of her class. Unfortunately, illness forced her to retire from a way of life she dearly loved, that of comforting and serving others.
Shirley was loved dearly by all of her family and will be greatly missed.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Guy M. Beckwith; her parents, Charles and Mary Flynt; brothers, Charles and Walter Ligon Flynt; sisters, Sara Spikes and Barbara Bates; and a daughter, Mary "Becky" Freed.
Survivors: Children, Dave Beckwith and his wife, Mary, Chuck Beckwith and his wife, Susan, Rose Ann Beckwith and Tom Beckwith and his wife, Jennifer; son-in-law, Tighe Freed; grandchildren, Wendy and husband, Marshall, Mike and wife, Tina, Kristi and husband, Stuart, Barbara and husband, Kenneth, Hope and husband, Robert, Kelly and husband, Jeff, Jason Freed, Donnie and wife, Kristal, Madison Beckwith, Brandi and husband, David, and Heather and husband, Eddie; and great-grandchildren, Anna, Jacob, Mason, Grace, Lizzie, Elizabeth, Christian, Dakota, Joshua, Paeton, Jessica, Colton, Brandon, Derek, Dalton, Hunter, Aubanny, Desiree, Ethan, Garrett and Liam.
