She was born in Lowell on Jan. 29, 1918, a daughter of the late John J. and Elizabeth (Sullivan) Highland, and attended local schools. She graduated from Lowell High School in 1936, and then graduated from Lowell Commercial College.
She was a communicant of St. Margaret Church and a member of the Blessed Virgin Sodality of her parish. She was also a member of the Retired Association of State, County and Municipal Employees.
Besides her husband, survivors include three nephews, John McGowan and his wife, Mary, of Lowell, James McGowan and his wife, Laura, of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Henry McGowan of Lowell; and six great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was also the sister of Mary H. McGowan, who died June 9, 1992.
